Wireless Voice for your patient: Vital-Sim

Both the Vital-Sim and Sim-Man level patients have "built-in" voices that may be activated through the computer for the Sim-Man or hand control for Vital-Sim.  Both provide limited responses, such as "No," "Doc, this really hurts," and similar sounds. There are times though, when you may want the patient to respond more fully and therefore, be more interactive.  Here is one method for Vital-Sim patients that works using an inexpensive RadioShack wireless microphone.  There are three parts: a microphone, transmitter, and receiver.  Laerdal also has a wireless microphone accessory.  Both the RadioShack and Laerdal units must have the receiver plugged into a wall outlet.  There are other set ups that run on battery power and give your patient mobility for scenarios involving transport..

1. Find your Vital-Sim control box as pictured.
2. Locate the audio input (most likely not marked so see below)
3. Locate the audio output on the back of the RadioShack Receiver box.
4. Connect an audio cable into the "High Z" jack on the Receiver box.
5. Connect the other end of the cable into the audio input of the Vital-Sim box.
6. Turn on the power to both Vital-Sim and Receiver boxes.
7. Connect a microphone to the RadioShack Transmitter (shown below.)
8. Turn on the power to the Transmitter (battery operated)
9. Turn OFF the "mute" button.
10. Speak into the microphone and....ta dahhhhh, the patient speaks.
11. If not, increase the volume control on the front of the RadioShack Receiver box.
12. If still not heard well, increase the volume control of the patient voice through the Laerdal hand held remote control.  Ramp it up to about level 7 and try again.

Still did not work?  Help!

Big hint:  Cup the microphone deep in your hand.  Hold your hand against your mouth and speak softly.  This will cut down on noise from about you and also slightly alter your voice.

Back of Laerdal Vital-Sim control box showing audio input ">"The yellow ">" indicates the audio input  for your wireless microphone receiver.  This is where you will attach the cable that come FROM the receiver output.  Shown below.

[FrontPage Image Map Component]Turn on the power to the Receiver Box. Adjus the volume control so that the patient's voice is understood, but not so loud as to be distorted.  Bass and treble can also be adjusted to give a more easily understood voice to the patient.  Experiment.  Have fun.

[FrontPage Image Map Component]This particular model of wireless microphone transmitter has an "on-off button" and a "mute" button.  The power must be on and the "mute" button OFF to transmit. Use the "mute" button to prevent your speaking being transmitted. Be sure to turn off the power before walking away.  This device takes a 9 volt battery.  A microphone, perhaps from one of your older computers plugs into the top of the transmitter.
